Color in Composition

Workshop description
Color in Composition is a hands-on weaving workshop that encourages creative thinking about the use of color in weaving. Through block designs, we will study how block size, proportion, and color choices work together to shape the overall mood of the cloth, from energizing to calm. We will explore intuitive approaches to color by engaging all of our senses, and we will use color theory as a supportive reference. Participants will build on their own color preferences while learning to create depth, balance, and harmony in handwoven fabrics.

Four-shaft and eight-shaft designs will be provided, with an emphasis on design considerations such as proportion, symmetry, and asymmetry. Beginning with warp stripes in varying color combinations and stripe proportions, students will then apply weft colors and treadling variations to the blocks and observe how the interactions influence the final cloth.

This workshop is suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate weavers and can also support advanced weavers interested in exploring color more deeply. We'll work with turned twill blocks on eight shafts and summer and winter blocks on four to eight shafts. Students will warp their looms with 10/2 or 8/2 cotton. A wide selection of colors wound on bobbins will be available for experimentation, along with any additional colors participants wish to bring. Instruction will include a PowerPoint lecture with illustrated examples, supported by a detailed workshop notebook. A large collection of handwoven samples will also be available to study and explore.
